Young wordsmiths can apply for Writer Squad

ASPIRING young writers are invited to apply to join the first-ever Portsmouth ‘Writer Squad’.

The New Theatre Royal and literature development agency, New Writing South, are calling on all keen wordsmiths aged from 13 to 17 to put themselves forward for a unique opportunity.

The Squad will meet once a month for 11 months from September at the theatre where a professional writer will introduce youngsters to a wide range of styles from poetry to playwriting, lyrics and short stories.

The Portsmouth Writer Squad is one of four being set up in the south east – the other three are to be established in Eastleigh, Rye and Margate.

To enter submit a short written piece – at least 300 words – in any genre but with the title Breakfast, with your name, age, address and email address to: Anna Jefferson, Creative Learning Manager, New Writing South, 9 Jew Street, Brighton, BN1 1UT, or email

Successful applicants will be invited to a workshop from 10am until 12pm on Saturday, June 25, at the New Theatre Royal. Deadline is May 27.

Comments on this Daily Mail article?  Probably not such a great piece of research – 2000 polled by TalkTalk who are now benefiting nicely from the ‘advertising’ of this piece of ‘shock-horror’ news.
